[00:00:12] Darren J. Cunningham is a British electronic musician, best known

[00:00:21] under the pseudonym Actress. His music has been released by a number

[00:00:33] of different labels, including Honest Jon's Records, Nonplus Records,

[00:00:50] and Werkdiscs, a label he co-founded in 2004.

[00:01:06] Actress is the recording name of avant-garde UK producer Darren

[00:01:19] Cunningham. Since the release of his ?rst 12” in 2004 on his own Werkdiscs

[00:01:38] label, Cunningham has steadily gained an internationally revered reputation

[00:01:46] for his thrilling take on electronic dance music.

[00:02:04] Drawing on a deep appreciation for early 80s funk and electro, techno, art

[00:02:17] rock, house and noise, Cunningham put out his debut Actress album

[00:02:31] Hazyville on Werkdiscs in 2008. Splazsh followed two years later via Damon

[00:02:44] Albarn’s Honest Jon’s label, which The Wire honored as their 2010 album of

[00:02:57] the year.

[00:03:11] In 2012, Cunningham released his third album R.I.P. on Honest Jon’s to

[00:03:20] universal critical acclaim, including Best New Music on Pitchfork. Outside of

[00:03:33] his personal practice, Cunningham collaborated with the Tate Modern for a

[00:03:46] specially commissioned live music performance as part of their Yayoi

[00:04:00] Kusama exhibition. He also produced remixes for John Cale and Kasabian,

[00:04:13] adding to a remix back catalogue that includes Radiohead, Joy Orbison and

[00:04:28] Laurel Halo.

[00:04:36] On the Werkdiscs label side, Cunningham has proved his acutely tuned ear

[00:04:41] for A&R time and time again with records by Zomby, Lukid and Lone. After a

[00:04:46] short hiatus the label forged a partnership with long-running independent

[00:04:50] Ninja Tune in 2012, cemented with the release of Lukid’s Lonely at the Top

[00:05:15] album in winter 2012 and newcomer Moiré’s…18th January 2014
