So Happy Birthday(Remastered LP Version)

[00:00:01] So Happy Birthday - Laurie Anderson

[00:00:08] JOE: In our country you're free and so you're born

[00:00:11] And so they say "You're free " so happy birthday

[00:00:16] And even if you were born to lose--even if you were

[00:00:18] A complete wreck when you were born--you might still

[00:00:21] Grow up to be president because you're free

[00:00:26] GERALDINE: Today you might be an average citizen

[00:00:28] A civilian a pedestrian But tomorrow you might

[00:00:33] Be elected to some unexpected office--or sell your novel

[00:00:36] And suddenly become famous Or you could get run over

[00:00:41] By a truck and your picture could get into the papers

[00:00:44] _that_ way Because you're free and anything might happen

[00:00:49] so happy birthday

[00:00:52] JOE: Gee All those lights and all those screens

[00:00:55] The New York Experience is mind-boggling I don't think

[00:00:59] I've ever seen that many screens and I'll probably come

[00:01:02] Again It was really amazing mind-boggling

[00:01:07] GERALDINE: You're walking and you don't always realize

[00:01:09] It but you're always falling at the same time With each

[00:01:14] Step you fall forward Over and over you're falling

[00:01:19] And then catching yourself from falling And this is

[00:01:22] How you can be walking and falling at the same time

[00:01:27] JOE: Look Over there It's a real dog and it's really talking

[00:01:32] GERALDINE: I wanted you and I was looking for you

[00:01:36] But I couldn't find you I wanted you and I was looking

[00:01:40] For you all day but I couldn't find you

[00:01:46] JOE: Well I paid my money and I've got this funny feeling

[00:01:50] That somehow--you know--it's not what I paid my money for

[00:01:54] I mean I _paid_ my money and I just don't think this is

[00:01:57] What I paid my money--you know--what I paid my money for

[00:02:02] GERALDINE: No one has ever looked at me like this before

[00:02:06] No one has ever _stared_ at me for so long like this

[00:02:11] This is the first time anyone has ever looked at me like

[00:02:14] This stared at me like this for such a long time

[00:02:18] For so long

[00:02:20] JOE: Well he didn't know what to do so he just decided

[00:02:23] To watch the government and see what the government was

[00:02:26] Doing and then kind of scale it down to size--and run his

[00:02:30] Life that way

[00:02:32] GERALDINE: She said the hardest thing to teach her

[00:02:34] Three-year-old kid was what was alive and what wasn't

[00:02:38] The phone rings and she holds it out to her kid and says

[00:02:42] "It's Grandma Talk to Grandma " But she's holding a

[00:02:46] Piece of plastic And the kid says to herself: "Wait a

[00:02:50] Minute Is the phone alive Is the TV alive What about

[00:02:56] That radio What is alive in this room and what doesn't

[00:03:01] Have life " Unfortunately she doesn't know how to ask

[00:03:05] These questions

[00:03:07] JOE: We were in a large room Full of people All kinds

[00:03:11] And they had arrived at the same time And they were all

[00:03:14] Free and they were all asking themselves the same question:

[00:03:18] What is behind that curtain They were all free And they

[00:03:21] Were all wondering what would happen next

[00:03:24] GERALDINE: This is the time and this is the record of the time
