[00:00:00] The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum was

[00:00:03] opened in Geneva in 1988.

[00:00:07] It tells the story of men and women who,

[00:00:09] in the course of the major events of the last 150 years,

[00:00:14] have given assistance to victims of war and natural disasters.

[00:00:19] The organization was established in 1863 and was based on an

[00:00:24] idea by a Swiss businessman called Henri Durant.

[00:00:29] He had witnessed the heavy casualties at the battle of

[00:00:32] Sulferino in Italy 4 years earlier,

[00:00:35] in which 40, 000 people were killed, wounded or missing.

[00:00:40] He had seen the lack of medical services and the great

[00:00:42] suffering of many of the wounded who simply died from lack of

[00:00:46] care.

[00:00:48] The International Red Cross or Red Crescent exists to help the

[00:00:52] victims of conflicts and disasters regardless of their

[00:00:55] nationalities.

[00:00:58] The symbol of the organization was originally just the

[00:01:01] red cross.

[00:01:02] It has no religious significance.

[00:01:05] The founders of the movement adopted it as a tribute to

[00:01:08] Switzerland.

[00:01:09] However, during the Russo-Turkish War,

[00:01:13] the Turks felt that the cross could be seen as offensive

[00:01:16] to Muslim soldiers, and a second symbol, the red crescent,

[00:01:20] was adopted for use by national organizations in the

[00:01:23] Islamic world.

[00:01:25] Both are now official symbols.
